October 15th, 2013
Marc Meketon, David Hunt, and Alexander Shatov on Crew Roster Algorithm for Commuter Passenger Rail Operators at Drexel University 5:30pm at Drexel University, 101 North 33rd Street, Room 220; Philadelphia, PA 19104.  Crews are one of the largest expenses incurred by any transportation company, and therefore an area that receives much attention.  Optimizing crew assignments becomes complex, and interesting, when trying to match crews to service schedules and when multiple crews members are needed for each trip, as is the case in both airlines and railroads.

Friday, February 8th, 2013 at 5:00 PM Alfred Blumstein on Criminology
We begin with the structure of a criminal career, explore approaches to modeling and using the results for policy. One issue of particular attention is the problem of determining when a specific individual’s career has terminated. That links to the growing problem of individuals who got a criminal record for something they did when they were young, and still can’t get a job 20 years later. That calls for some attention to their “redemption” when their risk of a new crime is low enough. Using a sample of criminal history records, we can estimate redemption times when a first-time offender’s recidivism risk drops below that of the general population and gets “close enough” (within a specified risk tolerance) to those with no prior record. We explore the policy implications of such estimates. This work was done with Kiminori Nakamura of the University of Maryland.

March 24th, 2011 meeting, Drexel University
John Toczek discussed predicting crime in Philadelphia.  Using historical crime data and analytics, over 200 users from 12 countries participated in Analytics X, an online competition that ran in 2010 to predict where crime would occur in Philadelphia.  Competitors uploaded mathematical models which were then judged and ranked by accuracy (using RMSE).  Attendees of this session will learn about predictive analytics, prediction strategies (including time series, network, and regressive analyses), the efficiency of these strategies, and an overview of Analytics X.

May 7th, 2010 meeting

March 15th, 2010 meeting
Our March meeting was held on: March 15th 2010 (Monday) from 4:30 to 6:30pm at the Drexel University.

July 21, 2009 meeting
Our July meeting was held on:  July 21st 2009 (Tuesday) from 4:30 to 6:30pm at the ARAMARK Tower in downtown Philadelphia. ARAMARK's Decision Support team (Natawan Teerapirak, John Toczek, and Andrew Pelcin) in a joint effort with Bayes Corp.,(Nigel Cooper and James Sewell) presented a talk on predicting the ultimate cost of employee injuries.  This talk was given at the annual INFORMS meeting in Phoenix, AZ in April 2009.

April 6th, 2009 meeting
Our April meeting was held on: April 6th 2009 (Monday) from 4:30 to 6:30pm at the ARAMARK Tower in downtown Philadelphia.  Dr. Bruce Pollack-Johnson of Villanova University spoke on project management and the relationships between quality, time and cost.  Traditional project management utilizes a time/cost analysis and assumes equal quality for each task within the project.  Dr. Pollack-Johnson's research recognizes that the quality of a task is determined by the time and money spent on it.  Utilizing a nonlinear programming model, the overall quality of a project can be maximized and the tradeoffs between time, cost, and quality can be evaluated.

Our meeting was also broadcast via webex, conference call, and webcam.
Mr. Sewell's slides can be found here.
